As we reflect on our (just completed) thru-hiking adventure with our kids, we’ve been reminded of just how educational and eye-opening this experience can be, especially for our little ones. 🏞️📚

One of the most valuable lessons they’re learning is about respecting and understanding the countryside. 🌳🌼 Teaching them to read the signs, not just the ones on paper, but those written by nature itself, is a profound part of this journey.

🚪 Closing Gates: Our hikes have taught our kids the importance of closing gates behind us. It’s not just about being polite; it’s about respecting the livelihoods of those who work the land. When you close a gate, you’re helping to keep livestock safe and preserving the natural balance of the countryside.

🌾 Footpath Etiquette: Understanding and respecting footpath etiquette is another vital lesson. Yielding to oncoming hikers, not trampling on delicate flora, and staying on designated paths are all part of minimizing our impact on these beautiful landscapes.

🔍 Reading Nature’s Signs: The countryside is a treasure trove of lessons waiting to be discovered. Our kids are learning to read the tracks of animals, identify various plants, and even predict the weather based on cloud patterns. It’s like a living, breathing outdoor classroom!
