10 Fun Woodland Activities for Kids to Learn About Nature and the Environment

As home educators and parents, we know that learning can happen anywhere, even in the great outdoors! And what better place to explore than a nearby woodland?

Not only is it a chance to get some fresh air and exercise, but it also provides an opportunity to learn about nature and the environment. Here are some fun woodland activities that you can do with your children to help them appreciate and understand the natural world.

  1. Nature scavenger hunt: Create a list of things to find in the woods, such as a pine cone, a leaf of a certain shape or colour, a bird’s nest, or a flower (that can be safely identified). Give your child a bag or basket to collect their treasures and see who can find everything on the list first.

2. Leaf rubbings: Place a leaf under a piece of paper and rub a crayon or pencil over the top. The texture of the leaf will appear on the paper, creating a beautiful and unique design. This is a great way to learn about the different types of leaves and their shapes.

3. Wildlife observation: Bring binoculars and a field guide to identify different birds, mammals, and insects in the woods. You can also use a smartphone app to help you identify different species. Encourage your child to draw or take photos of the wildlife they see to document their discoveries.

4. Nature art: Collect sticks, leaves, and other natural materials to create art. You can make a nature mandala by arranging materials in a circular pattern on the ground, or use sticks to build a fairy house or teepee. This activity encourages creativity and imagination.

Learning is Great Fun!

5. Tree identification: Use a field guide to identify different types of trees in the woods. Look at the leaves, bark, and overall shape of the tree to make a determination. You can even measure the circumference of the tree trunk to determine its age.

6. Nature journaling: Bring a notebook and pencil to record observations about the plants and animals you see in the woods. Encourage your child to draw or write about their experiences and what they’ve learned. This activity helps to develop scientific inquiry skills and fosters a love of nature.

This activity promotes independence and self-sufficiency while also providing an opportunity to learn about ecology and conservation.
