A Quick Guide to Safety Considerations and Precautions: Hiking with kids

A Quick Guide to Safety Considerations and Precautions: Hiking with kids **these also apply to when you are hiking without kids too :)**

Hiking with children

Hiking with kids can be a wonderful and memorable experience, but it’s important to take the necessary safety precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Select the Appropriate Trails and Routes: Begin with trails that are simple, well-maintained, and have limited elevation changes, and make sure the trail suits the age and ability of your children. As they gain experience and confidence, you can gradually increase the length, distance, and height of your hikes. However, always consider factors such as (their) pace, daylight availability, temperature, and terrain when planning your hikes, and have a backup plan in case conditions become unfavourable. Ensure that you have the proper protection, footwear, and supplies for the terrain, and be prepared for potential changes in weather. Keep in mind that your group’s pace will be determined by the slowest member.

Plan ahead: Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. Make sure to bring enough food, water, and first-aid supplies. Check for any trail closures, flooding or warning signs before you set out.

Wear the right gear: Make sure your kids wear comfortable and appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and a hat. They should also wear a backpack that fits well and is appropriate for their size and age (see blog on hiking equipment: bags)

Educate them on Essential Hiking Skills: Make sure your kids know the basics of safe hiking, such as the importance of proper layering (temperatures can change quickly as you ascend), staying on the trail, being aware of their surroundings, and respecting wildlife. Highlight the significance of hydration and taking breaks as needed. Educate them to pay attention to others they encounter them during their hike, as this awareness could potentially save a life.

Stay together: Make sure your kids stay within your sight and hearing distance at all times. Keep the group together, and encourage kids to hike at their own pace.

Flooding!!!

Keep an eye on the weather: Be prepared for sudden weather changes and be ready to adjust your plans accordingly. If a storm is approaching, seek shelter immediately. Carry a storm shelter and have it handy to use in an emergency. Pack emergency layers and heat blankets.

Stay on marked trails: Teach your kids to stay on marked trails to avoid getting lost and to protect sensitive natural areas. This also lessens erosion, and stops further scarring of the landscape.

Be prepared for emergencies: Make sure you have a first-aid kit, a map, and a compass. Know the location of the nearest hospital, and be familiar with basic first-aid procedures. Carry spare battery packs and ensure your phone is charged. Learn to read a map and to navigate- teach your kids this essential skill too.

Navigation is an important skill. Although GPS can be handy, you cannot rely on it always working

The Importance of Adequate Hydration: It is crucial to bring enough water on a hike to ensure proper hydration. Dehydration can lead to headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and decreased performance, so it is essential to drink water regularly and replenish fluids throughout the hike. Make sure to pack enough water for the entire hike, taking into consideration the length, difficulty, and weather conditions. I won’t go into horror stories here, but generally people are underprepared when planning for hydration. Consider also carrying electrolytes for emergencies

TELL SOMEONE WHERE YOU ARE GOING: Tell a family member, friends etc. your intention, location and how long you expect to be away for/when you expect to return. They can raise the alarm in an emergency.

By following these tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking experience for you and your kids. Always be prepared!
