WILD HOME EDUCATION
Outdoor home education, also known as nature-based or forest schooling (in other parts of the world), is an alternative approach to traditional home schooling. It emphasises learning through hands-on, experiential activities in the natural world, rather than solely indoors.
This type of education is based on the belief that children learn best when they are actively engaged in their environment and that nature provides a rich and stimulating learning environment. Outdoor home education typically include activities such as hiking, gardening, wildlife observation, and environmental stewardship, and may also incorporate traditional subjects such as math, science, and language arts into the curriculum (that is, if you have chosen a curriculum*).
The ultimate goal of outdoor home education is to foster a deep love and respect for the natural world while providing children with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the world around them.
Which direction can one adventure with their children?
There is no wrong way or right way to do it!
Personally, we combine a traditional curriculum and cater a lot of the learning to outdoor education. It allows us to combine the benefits of traditional home education, with the added benefits of learning and consolidating in an outdoor environment.
Our own children get the usual math, reading, and writing subjects at home- as well as hands-on, experiential learning opportunities in nature. We have found that this approach encourages our children to be developing a love for learning and a deeper connection to the natural world.
As parents we want them to have a well-rounded education that prepares them for future success- whilst also fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
It works for us! But what works for us, may not work for you! if you embark on a home education journey I strongly suggest experimenting to see what works best for your wildlings and your family.
Spending too much time indoors on gadgets is a growing concern for children’s health and well-being. Studies have shown that excessive screen time can lead to a host of negative effects, including obesity, poor sleep, and behavioural problems. Additionally, spending too much time indoors can lead to a lack of exposure to natural light and fresh air, which can have a detrimental impact on physical and mental health.
I know that if either of my children spend too long in front of any screen, they become difficult to talk to, and become very irritable.
We found that by balancing the two approaches, it helps to mitigate the negative effects of excessive screen time and promotes a healthy balance between indoor and outdoor activities.
